Description

Town Head is an 18th-century house with early 19th-century additions, situated on the west side of the A592 road at Staveley-in-Cartmel. It is constructed of roughcast stone with slate roofs.

The south facade is two stories and five bays, with the end bays recessed and of lower height, each topped with a hipped roof and a verandah. A sill band runs across the first floor, and a cornice defines the top of the end bays. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars. The fifth bay on the ground floor and the first and fifth bays on the first floor feature tripartite windows. The three-bay verandahs have unfluted Doric columns, a frieze, a cornice, and a parapet. Gable end stacks are present.

The left return elevation has three bays, the third of which projects forward with a two-story bowed bay containing triple sashed windows. The right return elevation has six bays, with the first bay projecting and the sixth being higher. The first bay has a two-story bowed bay and a projecting single-story service wing; a lean-to porch is attached to the fourth bay. Cross-axial and gable end stacks are also present here.

The rear of the building features a gabled stair wing and a stack within the roof slope. The site has historical connections to a ferry service across Lake Windermere.
