Description

Barrow Fold is a house that likely dates from the 17th century or early 18th century. It is built of roughcast stone and has a slate roof. The building has two storeys and four bays. The windows are small-paned casements; the ground floor features a bow window in the former entrance to the first bay and a window in the third bay. On the first floor, there is a window in the second bay and a stair window in the fourth bay. The entrance is located in a gabled porch and has a boarded door with 19th-century decorative hinges and handle.

The house has a narrow projecting gable-end stack and a cross-axial stack. The right side of the building has dripcourses on both floors and a continuous sill on the ground floor, with one window in the former entrance. At the rear, there is a wing extending from the third bay. The first floor of this wing has windows with small-paned fixed glazing and opening lights in the first and fourth bays. The wing also features a gable-end stack and a later lean-to extension; the window on the left return has a three-light frame with intermediate bars and a central iron casement, along with entrances to the inner angle and the extension.

Inside, the house has chamfered beams, and part of the hall is open to the roof. There are two balconies, one of which has an ex-situ balustrade with splat balusters and a moulded handrail. One fireplace features a corbelled timber lintel, and there is a fielded-panel spice cupboard door to the side. Another fireplace has a plaster panel, possibly from the 17th century, adorned with two strips of an oak leaf trail pattern above the timber lintel. The 20th-century stair has what is likely ex-situ plank and muntin panelling, with similar panelling found on the first floor.
