Description

The New Bridge over the River Barle, located on the former drive to Pixton Park, was built around 1870. It is constructed from coursed local slate stone with dressed voussoirs that step out. The bridge features a three-arch span, with semi-circular outer arches and a larger segmental central arch. On the south faces, there are low pointed cutwaters, a flat string band, chamfered saddle back coping, and low square piers at either end of the parapet, which were obscured by ivy at the time of the survey in July 1985. The center of the parapets has inserted elliptical openings, which may incorporate medieval stonework. The northern parapet shows slight damage and requires repointing. This bridge was created by the Earl of Carnarvon as a new entrance to Pixton Park when he relocated the entrance to the house. A lodge, which is not included in this listing, is located about 60 meters to the east and is also dated to 1870.
