Description
Barle Bridge is a road bridge over the River Barle, originally built in the medieval period. It was repaired in 1624 and later widened in 1819 by John Stone. Additional repairs were carried out in 1866 and again from 1952 to 1953 following flood damage. The bridge is constructed from local stone in random rubble, featuring rubble voussoirs, an ashlar string course, flat coping on the parapet, and three-tier stepped coping on the buttresses. It has a five-arch span with pointed cutwater buttresses between four-centred arch openings. There is a tablet on the exterior of the parapet that is inscribed with "This bridge repaired in the year of Our Lord God 1624" and "John Stone 1819." The bridge is also designated as a scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No 267).
