Description

Lyn House is a large detached house located in Lynton and Lynmouth, dating from the early to mid 19th century. The building is rendered and features slate roofs. It has a parallel range villa design with gabled cross wings at either end, creating a recessed center. The wing on the right is cut off at an obtuse angle to fit the steep and narrow hill at this location.

The house has two storeys and presents a formal front with a window arrangement of 1:3:1. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows, all featuring hoodmoulds with dropped ends. The ground floor includes margin-pane French doors, except for the right-hand wing, which has a 12-pane sash window; all openings in the wings also have hoodmoulds. To the left of the recessed center, there is an opening that leads to a throughway.

The left-hand (east) return has two windows, with either 12-pane or 16-pane sashes, including a flat-roofed bay on the ground floor. There are chimney stacks located at the rear of the ridge in the left wing and at the outer eaves of the right wing. The main entrance is positioned centrally at the back, elevated due to the rise in the ground, and features a gabled panelled doorway. Additionally, there is a 15-pane stair sash and various other windows on this front. A flat-roofed one-storey extension is present on the east side. The interior is not accessible, but some windows appear to have panelled shutters.
