Description
A large detached house dating to the early to mid-19th century, with 20th-century alterations, is situated on Perrymead Hill. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar, with the street front rendered, and has slate roofs. The complex plan requires further interior inspection to fully understand its building history. The main range fronts the street, including a wing set at a slight angle to the right. A single-bay range was added later to the left, and to the rear are three separately roofed but linked sections, accommodating an extra storey due to the steep slope of the site. Balconies are present at two levels in the right half of the building.
The front façade is two and three stories high, with mainly glazing bar sashes. The principal range features paired twelve-pane sashes in a hipped projecting bay, and a central gabled oriel window with casement lights incorporating diagonal glazing bars. Smaller lights are present in the returns, and a two-light window faces the front. Ground floor windows include a large twelve-pane sash in the projecting bay, and a smaller twelve-pane sash far to the right. A panelled, part-glazed door has narrow sidelights and a shallow segmental margin pane transom light, set within broad stone pilasters supporting moulded brackets, a cornice, and a slab hood that shelters the oriel bay. To the right of the door is a small arched light. The hipped eaves roof has large, thin end stacks and a smaller central ridge stack, with a coped gable above an anchor in a sunk panel. A wide bay has been added to the left, featuring a twelve-pane sash above wide carriage doors. A three-storey section to the right has scattered fenestration, including three twelve-pane sashes – one a large stair light – and a central 20th-century door with small lights on either side. This section has a plain parapet and a hipped outer end, with a lower, two-storey gabled wing that has paired casements above plank doors. To the rear, facing west, the rear elevation is ashlar. A narrow, hipped, three-storey single bay wing with twelve-pane sashes and stacks on either side is attached by a recessed link, which includes a door at a high level. A square, projecting wing has a hipped roof and parapet above a deep two-light casement with a transom and a smaller sash, both with Venetian shutters, above a flat-roofed extension with plain sashes and a full-width verandah supported on five slender standards, which returns to a set-back hipped wing with a four-pane sash and a continuation of the two levels of verandah, including a glazed conservatory.
The interior has not been inspected.
To the left of the main entrance porch, a short run of simple iron railing, set on a stone curb, follows the slope of the hill and returns at the left-hand end.
