Description
Croft House, formerly known as Sylvia House Hotel, is a mid-19th century building located on Lydiate Lane in Lynton and Lynmouth. It is rendered with a slate roof and set back from the street on a high semi-basement, forming part of a row of buildings. The house has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, featuring a three-window front.
At the top, there is a small central raking dormer with a four-light sash, flanked by wider dormers that have paired four-pane lights and blank side panels. Below, the facade includes twelve-pane sashes in plain reveals, with a central door set under an arch that has a plain tympanum. This door is sheltered by a large gabled porch, which has four lights on each side and one light beside the outer door, accessed by seven steep steps. The basement features small lights with cambered heads, and the building has plain end pilasters and gable stacks.
At the rear, there are two wide three-light dormers with four-pane sashes, although one has been replaced with a slate-hung panel. The first floor has three twelve-pane sashes, along with a small gabled projecting wing situated between the first and second windows. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to retain original features.
