Description
The School House is a detached cottage built in the mid-19th century, located on Market Street in Lynton. It features painted rubble walls and a roof made of graded Delabole slate. The building has a small L-shaped plan with a central staircase at the rear. It stands two stories tall and has a front with one window on the left and two windows on the right, all of which are casements set on stone cills and include some horizontal bars. To the left, there is a plank door, and to the right, in a gabled wing that projects forward, there are two-light windows on each floor, all topped with flat voussoir heads. The left return gable has a three-light window above a two-light window, while the rear features six-light and four-light casements grouped at the west end. There are lateral slate-hung eaves stacks, as well as a similar stack on the west wall of the wing. The two gables are adorned with decorative barge-boards. The interior appears to have been stripped, but remnants of a stick balustrade staircase remain. At the time of the survey, the building seemed to be unused. In the 19th century, it served as the school house for the nearby school, which is not included in this listing.
