Description

St Vincent is a detached villa built in 1834, located on Market Street in Lynton. The building features a smooth rendered exterior and a slate roof, presenting a compact symmetrical central hall plan with a raised central gable pediment. It stands two storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has a three-window range. The windows are 6/6-pane sashes set on stone cills with plain reveals. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door topped by a radial fanlight, accessed via three slate steps with nosings. This door is situated in a deep arched recess that has a plastered groined vault supported by turned corbels in the corners. The villa is adorned with plain end pilasters, and the central gable features a scalloped barge-board along with an inset date-stone. Each of the wide plain end gables has a deep brick stack.

At the rear, there are three small gabled dormers with 2-light casements above modified 12-pane sashes and an 18-pane stair light. The lower ground floor includes a central door and a large inserted 20th-century panel to the right, while to the left is a wide 16-pane sash with a peaked head.

Inside, only part of the ground floor was inspected. A long narrow hall leads to a striking geometrical staircase within a tight semicircular well, featuring stick balusters and a swept handrail that rises through the full height of the building. A basement stair descends to the right. The doors throughout are generally original panelled, surrounded by fine linear mould panel surrounds in moulded architraves.
