Description
The West Gateway and gates to the churchyard of the Church of St Mary were built around 1900. They feature sandstone piers and wooden gates. The gateway consists of a pair of plain piers, each approximately 0.6 meters square, with small plinths and flat cappings on a moulded edge. The gates are made of planks with scrolled top rails and have four vertical panels adorned with fine Art Nouveau carvings in enriched surrounds. At the time of the survey, the right-hand gate had a broken top (scroll) rail. The gates are hung on the original blacksmith's hinges and are similar to, but more ornate than, the corresponding gates at the south porch of the Church of St Mary and the south gateway. Together, they significantly enhance the Arts and Crafts rebuilding of this church.
