Description

Alford House Hotel is a hotel located in a row of houses in Lynton, with a site lease document dated November 1845, indicating it was established for John Haynes, reportedly as a boarding house. The building is rendered with a slate roof and features a symmetrical double-depth block with a four-room plan and a central staircase. It has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with three windows on the front.

The façade includes three gabled half-dormers with four-pane sash windows set in architraves, positioned above two-light margin-pane casements and a pair of French doors that open to the portico roof, all framed with architraves. On the ground floor, there are flat-roofed canted bays with French doors and casements, along with a central five-panel door topped by a fanlight, all situated within a deep square portico supported by Doric columns and responds, featuring a slender three-part architrave. The stone landing to the portico includes a cast-iron grille for basement ventilation, and there are horizontal cast-iron ventilation grilles in front of each canted bay. The dormers are adorned with barge-boards that have drop finials and arch braces, and there is a chimney stack at each gable end. The rear of the building has two eaves stacks and a small two-light dormer.

Inside, the staircase features stick balusters with an open string and divides at the landing, which has an arched sash window with tinted and etched glass. The upper staircase, accessible through an archway, has a similar balustrade, a swept handrail, and turned newels. The ground-floor room to the right includes cornice mouldings with Greek key ornamentation. The basement was not inspected but was previously connected by an arched tunnel to a doorway in the retaining wall.
