Description
The retaining wall, gate, and steps to Alford House Hotel were built around 1845. The structure features a rubble wall that rises to approximately 3.5 meters in height on the left side, with a horizontal top, while the access path slopes up to the right. This wall retains the terrace garden of Alford House Hotel. At the left end, there is a 4-panel part-glazed door set in deep reveals, topped by a 3-pane transom light, which is accessed by three steps. This door leads to a passageway that is blocked at the time of survey, providing access to the basement of the property. On the right side, there is a rough arched opening with a wrought-iron gate featuring thin bars and dog-bars, designed with fleur-de-lys or flattened spearheads. This gate opens to a landing with one step, alongside a retaining wall to the right. A flight of ten slate steps rises to the left, behind the retaining wall, leading to another retaining wall on the right. This structure is included for its group value.
