Description

Castle Hornet is a detached house located in Lynmouth, dating from the 18th century or early 19th century. The building is constructed of whitewashed rubble and features a slate roof. It is a small L-plan cottage situated high on the slope of Summerhouse Hill. Originally, it was likely a two-room cottage, to which a lower wing was added to the southeast.

The house has two storeys. The main section includes a small two-light casement window and a small-pane casement oriel window with a gable. To the left, there is a part-glazed 19th-century door beneath a transom light with an oval glazed light, set on two deep steps. The right gable features an external stack, a 20th-century window at the first floor, and a circular light on the ground floor to the left, below the terrace level. The left gable also has a stack and a large flat-roofed semi-octagonal oriel that extends forward from the roof of the lower wing. This wing contains a two-light casement in the gable above a door, along with two additional two-light casements facing the entrance. A small eaves stack is located on the far side. The interior is not accessible, but the small scale of the building suggests it has early origins.
