Description
The Rising Sun Hotel (part) is a house that was originally two separate properties, likely dating back to the 17th century, but was raised and altered in the 19th century. It is located on Mars Hill in Lynmouth and features a rendered exterior with a concrete tile roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range, all consisting of 2-light casements with a horizontal bar and slate cills. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century door situated between the first two windows, along with an additional window to the right that may have been a former door. The right gable, which is partly above the adjacent property, includes a small 2-light casement and a cropped stack. At the rear, there is a door beneath a gabled dormer roof on the first floor that leads to the garden level. The interior was partly inspected but revealed no items of special interest. The property is part of a series of buildings that step up the steep slope of the hill. The small windows indicate an early design, and it appears that a former steep thatched roof was replaced with a later structure that increased the height of the attic space, leaving a large plain wall above the first-floor windows, with a discernible line indicating the previous eaves level.
