Description

The Esplanade Lime Kilns, located in Lynmouth, are lime kilns that likely date from the late 18th century. They are constructed of whitewashed rubble and feature an earth-covered roof. The structure is designed as a double bastion, connected on the left side by a broad flight of steps leading to the Pavilion, which is not included in this listing.

The kilns have two broad conjoined openings facing north, with flat segmental voussoir heads above the deep hearths, which are partially filled with later masonry. There is a small square flue-hole leading out from one of these openings. Additionally, there is a third hearth to the left, a fourth hearth on the eastern return that is now partly covered by the steps, and a fifth hearth to the right, facing west. The top of the kilns serves as part of a promenade and is enclosed by the upper walls of the kiln, featuring on-edge copings that rise approximately 0.4 to 0.9 meters above the ground level.

Historically, lime was in demand along the northern coast, particularly for use on local acid soils, and there was a consistent trade across the Severn estuary from South Wales for many years, continuing until the introduction of railways. An information plate on the kiln suggests it is approximately 200 years old, while historical references indicate a date of grant in 1698.
