Description

The Rising Sun Hotel, located on Mars Hill in Lynmouth, is a building that originally consisted of three houses, dating from the early to mid 18th century. The structure features limewashed rubble or rendered walls, with thatched roofs on the outer sections and concrete tiles on the middle unit. The lower level and the rear slope of the first house have asbestos cement roofing.

The hotel is two storeys tall. The first house on the left has a three-window front, with two-light six-pane casements above replacement windows and a central 20th-century door, all sheltered by a full-width thatched verandah supported by square posts. There is a stack on each gable and a large flat-roofed extension. Next to this, at a lower level, is another house with a two-window front featuring 20th-century windows and a square rubble eaves stack.

To the right is the main range of the hotel, which has a thatched roof and a four-window front. The first floor features boarded gables with two-light casements that have margin panes and leading, set beneath slight eyebrows. The ground floor includes three sash windows with leading, a large five-light 20th-century casement with a transom, and two 20th-century doors, one of which is located under a thatched hood on trellis cheeks. There are stacks at the rear eaves on the left and at the right gable end. The rear of the building has deep added wings in two positions.

The interiors have been partly inspected, revealing narrow staircases and various changes in level, but no items of special interest were noted. This range, which was formerly three separate houses, is connected to two additional properties and Shelley's Cottage to the left, forming a continuous stepped row that ascends Mars Hill and collectively constitutes the Rising Sun Hotel.
