Description

Orchard House is a hotel built in the early to mid 19th century, featuring a rendered exterior and a slate roof. The building has an L-shaped layout, with the gable of the longer wing facing the street. A second gabled range is positioned parallel and slightly back to the left, with the entrance located in the internal angle. The structure is set against an excavated rock at the back and consists of two storeys, an attic, and a part basement.

All windows are wooden casements with mullions and transoms, primarily featuring horizontal bars, although four windows have small-pane glazing. On the street side, the left wing includes a small two-light window above a three-light window, and a small-pane two-light window on the ground floor. This wing also has two arched openings with doors leading to the basement level. The roof here has unequal pitches and may have been raised by one floor.

The main gable displays decorative barge-boarding and has two-light casements at each level, with the ground floor window extending down to floor level. The return face features two two-light windows with small panes above a one-storey bay with a hipped roof. In the corner, there is an octagonal porch with a 20th-century door on the splayed face. The narrow returned wing has a hipped end over a canted corner, with a two-light window above a similar window at ground level. There is a valley stack and an additional eaves stack at the rear of the back wing.

The property includes a front boundary wall made of painted rubble, approximately 1.5 meters high, with a small iron gate at the right-hand end. Nine steps lead up to the slightly raised level where the house is situated. Orchard House is part of a series of 19th-century hotels on this street and is included for its group value.
