Description

Bonnicott is a hotel built in the early to mid 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building features a rendered exterior and a fish-tail slate roof. Its main range is symmetrical, highlighted by a central gable that is stepped forward, with the entrance located to the left and a lateral staircase at the rear. There are two additional gabled units set back to the left and large glazed conservatories with hipped roofs at the front. At the rear, there is a parallel range with a central valley gutter. The hotel is situated high above the road, cut into the rock-face at the back, and the northern end gable wall is curved to follow the line of Summerhouse Path, which ascends nearby.

The building has two storeys and features a window arrangement of 1+1+3, with all windows being 2-light wood casements that include mullions and transoms, though some have been replaced in the late 20th century. The left side of the main range includes a set-back wing with a gabled porch that has solid cheeks and a four-vertical-panel door set in a four-centred head. All gables are adorned with decorative barge-boards that have finials and drops, and there is a small chimney stack at each gable end of the main block.

Inside, the deep entrance lobby contains an inner door with margin-panes and tinted glass, leading to an inner hall that features a lateral staircase with a fine stick balustrade and a swept handrail, as well as a large 12-pane sash stair light. Many original six-panel doors are still present. Despite some significant external changes, Bonnicott retains interior details of architectural interest. The owners have indicated that the building dates back to 1820 according to the deeds, and like other buildings on this road, it likely started as a hotel.
