Description
Wortley House is a large detached house dating from the early 18th century. It is rendered overall and features stone slate roofs. The building has parallel ranges with hipped roofs and a central valley, a modillion cornice on the main facade, and a plain fascia board. There are large lateral rendered stacks. The house is three storeys high and has five windows, arranged in a grouping of two plus three. The windows are sashes with glazing bars set in moulded surrounds and bull-nose cills. The late 18th century door surround features half columns, and the pediment breaks into the cill above a well-crafted panelled door. The back facade includes a very large Venetian window with rectangular small panes of old glass in leading. Inside, there is a principal stair with twisted balusters and square newels, arranged in three flights that extend across the Venetian window. The ground floor rooms have delicate dado rails and trim, with panelled and moulded 18th and early 19th century doors. An attached kitchen wing predates the main house.
