Description
This is a barn and adjoining outbuildings located to the south of Piles Mill and Millhouse, dating from the mid-19th century. The structures are built from red sandstone random rubble, with some cob in a detached building that features double Roman tiles and decorative ridge tiles, also found on the byre. The roofs are primarily slate, with overhanging eaves supported by sprockets.
The layout consists of a range of outbuildings running roughly north-south from Piles Millhouse. A detached outbuilding is linked by a 20th-century gate (not included in the listing) to a shelter shed that abuts a bank barn, with additional outbuilding and byre beyond.
On the east front, the detached building is set into the hillside, with the wall breaking forward at the rear and featuring a small door. There is a two-bay linhay supported by a wooden pier on a stone pad. The bank barn has a layout of two-one-two bays, with the center section breaking forward. It includes a stable-type door on the first floor flanked by ventilation slits, while the ground floor has square-headed openings in the outer bays and segmental-headed doorways. The center has a wooden lintel over an opening with a hinged flap, and double doors at the rear. To the left, there is a lower two-storey structure that has been much altered, with wooden doors on the right. Beyond this is a single-storey byre with a single square-headed opening, a door, and an unglazed four-light opening on the left gable end.
