Description
The Red Lion Inn is a public house located on East Street in Ashburton. It dates back to the 16th century or earlier and was heightened and remodeled in the 19th century. The building features solid rendered walls and a slated roof, with two old rendered chimneys that have tapered caps on the rear wall. The inn is two rooms wide and one room deep, originally designed with a central through-passage. There is a rear storage wing to the right, which has been incorporated into a 20th-century extension.
The front range is three storeys tall, although it was likely only two storeys originally, while the wing is single storeyed. The façade is three windows wide, with doorways located in the centre and at the left-hand end of the ground storey. The ground floor includes two sash windows, each with three lights. The upper storey windows also have three lights; the window to the right on the second storey features small-paned sashes, while the others have small-paned wood casements.
Inside, the ground floor of the front range has been converted into a single bar. In the rear wall of what was the left-hand room, there is a stone chimneypiece, likely from the 16th century, with a roughly shaped lintel supported by double rounded corbels. A 17th-century ovolo-moulded beam spans the former passage. Between the first and second floors, there is a winding wood staircase, probably from the early 18th century, featuring flat sinuous balusters and a square newel with beaded corners.
