Description
The Union Inn is a public house that likely dates back to the 16th or 17th century, with later additions at both ends and at the rear. It is constructed from rendered stone or cob and has a slated roof. Originally, it probably featured a two-room and cross-passage layout, but the ground-floor partitions have been removed to create a single bar area. The building stands two storeys tall, with a single-storey addition on the left side.
The main facade has three windows, with an additional single window on the right that projects slightly. The entrance is off-centre to the left and features a porch with a slated pent roof. To the left of the doorway, there is a projecting chimney stack with a tapered top and an added shaft above. On the ridge of the roof to the right, in the original gable end, there is another squat, early chimney stack. All windows are wooden casements, with the single ground-floor window on the right having three lights and late 17th or early 18th century mullions.
The added double-depth range on the right has a doorway on the left side and a barred sash window with eight panes per sash, lacking horns, on the right side. In the right-hand gable wall, there is a 19th-century chimney stack on the front slope of the roof and another beyond the ridge. Inside, to the left of the main doorway on the ground floor, there is a fireplace with a plain wood lintel and a large stone-lined oven, which features a rectangular opening with a stone surround. The second storey and roof structure have not been inspected, but the landlord indicates that the roof contains early timbers.
