Description
These are a pair of cottages, likely dating from the 16th or 17th century, with later additions. They are situated in Denbury Village. The cottages are constructed of rendered stone or cob, and have a plain tile roof. The original plan probably comprised two rooms and a through-passage, with a rear wing – possibly an addition – behind number 4.
The cottages are two storeys high. A doorway roughly centrally positioned opens into the through passage. Number 6 has two windows to the front, all windows having metal casements. A large projecting stack is located at the rear. To the right of the main body is a rectangular projection with a window in the second storey. To the right again is a 20th-century projection (number 4), which has metal casement windows in each storey and a doorway to the left. This projection partly conceals the lower part of a large, originally projecting chimney-stack, which has had an added shaft placed on top. The rear wing has a stack in the rear gable.
The interior was not inspected, but it probably contains features of interest, potentially concealed beneath plaster.
The cottages are designated at Grade II for being a good example of a 16th/17th-century vernacular cottage that retains a significant proportion of its original fabric, including a lateral hall stack.
