Description

The Exeter Inn is a public house located on West Street in Ashburton. It dates back to the late medieval period and was remodeled in the early 18th century. The front of the building is rendered and likely timber-framed in the upper storey, featuring a dormer gable with painted slate-hanging. The roof is tarred and slated. The structure is one room wide and two rooms deep, with a chimney situated between the front and back rooms.

The building stands two storeys high with a garret and has two widely spaced windows on the ground floor, with a doorway located between them, slightly off-centre to the left. The door consists of six flush panels and is flanked by bead-moulded pilaster-strips and an entablature. The windows are barred sashes, with eight over eight panes to the left of the door, ten over fifteen panes to the right, and ten over ten panes in the upper storey. The eaves feature a coved cornice, and the triangular dormer gable spans nearly the entire front, containing a two-light sash window with six panes per sash, topped with a moulded cornice and slate-hanging.

Inside, only the ground storey was inspected. The front room has a large granite chimneypiece on the rear wall, with a chamfered lintel supported by large rounded corbels. The rear room contains a fireplace with a chamfered wood lintel in the right wall, though the opening is slightly too narrow for the stops, which show significant wear. Three smoke-blackened roof trusses are still visible.
