Description

The First and Last Inn is a public house located in Sennen, dating back to the 17th century, with extensions made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The older parts of the building are constructed from painted rubble, while the main 19th-century extension features stucco. The roofs are mostly covered with grouted scantle slate, although the front of the 17th-century section has been replaced with asbestos slate. The building has painted or rendered chimneys at the gable ends and over the rear wall of the 19th-century wing, along with some cast-iron ogee-section gutters.

The inn has a complex and irregular plan. The original 17th-century range is located on the left and has been remodelled and extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. To the right, there is a fairly deep wing designed in a restrained Tudor Gothic style. The 17th-century range now consists of one long room, with a later 19th-century outshut at the back on the left side and an adjoining outbuilding. There is also a parallel two-storey 19th-century wing behind the right side, which includes two reception rooms at the front, flanking a central entrance hall that leads to a stair hall situated between the rear service rooms.

The exterior of the building is two storeys high, with an overall six-window north front. The original part on the left features openings and a doorway that likely date from the late 18th century, including a 20th-century ledged door and early 20th-century six-pane horned sash windows. The taller 19th-century front, set back on the right, has three bays: a central four-centred arched doorway with a quatrefoil window opening above, a flat-fronted gable-ended bay on the left, and a canted bay on the right with a polygonal hipped roof. There are hoodmoulds over the first-floor openings, along with a 20th-century ledged door and horned sashes with glazing bars. The left-hand gable end has a small blocked chamfered window opening from the 17th century.

Inside, the original range features some late 18th-century moulded ceiling beams and a pair of granite fireplaces at the left-hand end. The first floor and other rooms have not been inspected.
