Description

The barn and shippon located approximately 20 metres east of Norden Thatch Farmhouse date from the 16th or 17th century, with the barn being reroofed in the late 19th to early 20th century. The structure is made of large blocks of coursed granite stone rubble that tends toward ashlar work, featuring massive dressed quoins, and has a corrugated iron roof that was originally thatch.

The barn, which may be older than the shippon, is situated on the right-hand side and has full height doorways in the centre of each long side that open onto the former threshing floor. It has a gable-ended roof, which is a later replacement from the late 19th to early 20th century. The shippon to the left is narrower and lower, with narrow slit windows along the long sides and a doorway located in the end wall.

The interior carpentry likely dates to the 17th century, featuring roughly-finished crossbeams that support the hayloft and a roof made of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. The roof is also gable-ended and extends over a secondary rubble-built shelter at the right end. There is no joinery remaining in the doorways. This shippon, particularly the barn, is noted for its unusual quality of construction, suggesting it may be earlier than typical examples. The building is attractively positioned and forms a group with the nearby farmhouse.
