Description
Hedge Barton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1848. The front is made of rendered granite rubble, while the sides and rear are exposed granite. It has a gable-ended concrete tile roof and features two gable stacks and two axial stacks, all rendered. This very long house has a layout that includes principal accommodation at one end with two main rooms divided by a stair hall, and a service range at the other end, with an integral outshut running the entire length of the house at the rear. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window arrangement on the right (main house) end with a central doorway, and a four-window service range on the left. All windows are 16-pane sashes with horns, except for the two first-floor windows on the left, which have eight panes. There are two porches: one at the left end, which is now blocked, has a gabled roof with barge-boards and a date stone of 1848; the other porch is at the center of the three-window range and features barge boards and 20th-century rustic timber work. The original front door has six panels, with the top four being glazed. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is known to contain a significant amount of original joinery, including the staircase. This farmhouse is an integral part of a large mid-19th century planned farm complex.
