Description

A range of farm buildings located immediately south-east of Combestone Farmhouse, dating from around the 18th century. The structure is built from granite rubble and features large granite quoins, topped with a hipped roof made of corrugated iron. The shippon includes a loft above and is accompanied by a row of pigsties on the outer south-west side, which has a slated lean-to roof. On the north-east side facing the farmyard, there are cattle shelters or linhays that were originally open-fronted but have been blocked on the left side with monolithic granite posts. At the higher north-west gable end, there is a loft doorway above a slit opening, with a doorway to the right. The lower south-east end has a blocked central opening with a flat stone arch, a very small square opening to the left, and a blocked opening at the base of the wall, likely for drainage. Inside, there is a drain running down the off-centre stone floor and a 19th-century pegged soft-wood roof. Adjoining at an obtuse angle at the lower south-east end is a long narrow building with a corrugated iron gable-ended roof, likely a cowshed with a loft above. This building features a small square loft loading doorway at the centre of the outer south-west side, two small square window openings on the front facing the yard, and a widened doorway opening on the left for vehicles, all with timber lintels. It is possible that this was built as a detached shippon when the lower end of the farmhouse was demolished.
