Description
A range of farmbuildings, dating from the mid to late 19th century, with later 19th or early 20th century additions, and minor late 20th century alterations. The buildings are constructed from snecked squared stone rubble and uncoursed stone rubble, with some rendered cob on a rubble plinth; later parts feature red brick dressings. They have gable-ended roofs covered in Welsh slate.
The original plan is a linear range facing a farmyard to the north-east and north-west, with a former outbuilding, likely a stable, adjoining the farmhouse to the south-east. This section was converted into a kitchen in the late 20th century. A range of five former pigstys adjoins at right angles to the rear. To the right, a further range extends at right angles, incorporating a former shippon (or possibly a stable) to the left, a central linhay, and a later 19th-century shippon (possibly formerly a stable) to the right. This final section has opposed central doorways and a wing projecting to the rear of the right-hand end.
The buildings are mostly one storey with a loft. The former stable adjoining the house has a pair of 19th-century two-light wooden windows with dressed stone segmental arches and a central plank door within a similar arched surround. The adjacent range has a former shippon/stable with a central window set within a stone segmental arch, flanked by plank doors also within stone segmental arches. The central linhay (partially obscured by a 20th-century corrugated iron addition) has a 20th-century window and a plank door with a wooden lintel to the right. The later 19th-century shippon has a pair of two-light wooden casements, with brick segmental arches above, flanking a central plank door, again within a brick segmental arch. A plank loft door with a brick segmental arch is set in the right-hand gable end. The rear wing features a pair of large boarded doors under a brick segmental arch.
These farmbuildings are part of a larger farmstead group, which includes Southwood Farmhouse and a barn with an adjoining horse-engine house.
