Description

Rambler Cottage is a house, likely originally two separate dwellings, probably dating from the late 17th century, with an early 19th century addition and minor alterations likely from the late 19th century. The original 17th century block has a ground floor of uncoursed stone rubble, rendered cob above, and a gable-ended thatched roof with a brick end stack. An early 19th century addition stands alongside, with a gable-ended roof covered in Welsh slate, likely built over stone rubble. A single-story outshut, roofed with corrugated iron or asbestos, extends from the rear of the 17th century section.

The original 17th century part of the house has an external end stack on the left side and a centrally located entrance. The original layout probably included a larger principal room to the left and a smaller, unheated room to the right. The early 19th century range to the right may have been a separate house at one time. A late 19th or early 20th century lean-to outshut is located at the rear of the 17th century section.

The building is three stories high, with the outshut one story and an attic. The front of the 17th century block displays a nearly symmetrical two-window arrangement, featuring late 20th century two-light plastic windows in what appear to be original openings, with stone sills on the ground floor. A late 20th century rendered half-hipped porch with a thatched roof sits centrally between the ground floor windows, containing a 20th century plank door. The early 19th century addition has a symmetrical three-window front with late 20th century plastic windows in original openings; these windows probably replaced earlier, multi-paned sash windows. The interior of the cottage was not inspected.
