Description

Old Brewery Cottage is a house that likely dates from the mid 17th century, with possible additions and alterations from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The building is rendered, probably over cob and stone rubble, and features a thatched roof that is hipped to the left. There is a rendered stone axial stack.

The layout of the house suggests a probable two-room central-entrance plan, with a larger principal room (hall) to the left that has an end stack, and a smaller unheated room to the right, which may have once had a stack but is now truncated. To the left, there is probably a late 18th century or early 19th century coach house that may have originally included a loft, which is now used as a bedroom. The house is two storeys high.

The exterior has a symmetrical front with three windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, all of which are mid to late 20th century two-light small-paned wooden casements set in old openings, with stone cills. The central doorway features a 19th century plank door with a wooden frame. The left side of the building has a first-floor mid to late 20th century two-light small-paned wooden casement, a ground-floor small-paned wooden casement to the right, and a coach house entry to the left that has a 20th century garage door.

While the interior was not inspected, some features were noted during a survey in January 1988. These include the left-hand ground-floor room, which has joists spanning from front to back, a 17th century fireplace with an ovolo-moulded wooden lintel, and a seat in the rear window. A full internal inspection is needed to confirm details about the house's plan and development. Poplar Row was previously known as Poplar Terrace.
