Description

Shoplands is a house dating from the late 17th century, with a late 20th-century addition. It is constructed from rendered cob and features a gable-ended roof covered with asbestos slate. There is a red-brick end stack on the right side. The building has a central entrance plan with two rooms; the larger principal room is on the right with an entrance at the front and an integral end stack, while the smaller unheated room on the left formerly had a staircase to the rear but now serves as an entrance hall. The entrance was later moved to the left-hand room. At the rear, there is a late 19th-century lean-to outshut, and a late 20th-century addition to the left, likely a converted outbuilding.

The house is two storeys tall and has a nearly symmetrical front. The first floor has five windows: three 19th-century two-light wooden casements on the right and two 20th-century two-light wooden casements on the left. The ground floor features a 19th-century three-light wooden casement on the far right, lighting the principal room, and a 20th-century three-light casement on the far left. There is a central inserted doorway with a 20th-century half-glazed door, the former principal entrance to the right with a 20th-century glazed door, and a doorway in the 20th-century addition to the left with a glazed door.

Inside, the right-hand ground-floor room (the hall) has a 17th-century chamfered cross beam, a chamfered cross beam alongside the right-hand end wall, and a head beam in the left-hand room (the present entrance hall). The roof space was not inspected, but the straight feet of probable 17th-century trusses were noted in the first-floor rooms.
