Description

The Cottage is a house dating from the mid 17th century to early 18th century. It is constructed of rendered cob on slate rubble footings and features a rag slate roof with a gabled end on the left and a hipped end on the right. There is a lower corrugated asbestos roof on a single-storey outshot to the left and a slate roof on a lean-to outshot on the right. A large stone rubble stack is located on the left gable end.

The house is built along a steep slope and faces south. It has a two-room plan with the entrance likely originally located to the right of center, leading directly into a large hall kitchen that is heated by the gable end stack. There is a smaller unheated room to the right, which was probably partitioned with a timber screen. The house was extended in the mid 18th century with an outshot extension on the left gable end and a lean-to outshot added on the right in the 19th century. The entrance was moved to the right, possibly also in the 19th century. In the mid 20th century, the internal partition was removed to create one large room, and the front wall of the left extension was rebuilt.

The exterior is two storeys high, with the ground sloping down to the right, and the extension on the left built into the bank. The left side features a 20th-century two-light casement window, a 20th-century part-glazed door to the right, and a 20th-century two-light casement window on the first floor. The rear elevation includes a 20th-century two-light and three-light casement window, along with a four-pane casement window in the outshot extension.

Inside, there is a 19th-century staircase with a square newel and stick balusters, as well as 19th-century ceiling beams. A 20th-century fireplace has been built in front of an earlier fireplace that features a timber lintel. The original location of the staircase may have been beside the fireplace. The roof is not fully accessible, but the purlins are deeply trenched.
