Description
Church House is a house dating from around the middle of the 18th century, with an extension added to the rear in 1842, marked by a datestone. The front range is of stone rubble and cob, painted on the north side, while the rear is of stone rubble. The roof is of rag slate with gable ends, and includes gable end and end stacks, one of stone rubble on the right and one on the front slope to the left, and a brick end stack on the rear. The original layout is uncertain, but it likely had a double-depth plan with a north-facing rear elevation to the road. It probably contained a central passage and two reception rooms to the south, heated by end stacks, alongside two smaller service rooms to the rear (north), the right-hand room also being heated. In 1842 a two-room range was added to the front right (southeast), and the house may have been reoriented at the same time to face north onto the road. A small outbuilding is on the right-hand (west) gable end. The front has an asymmetrical two-window design, featuring a 16-pane hornless sash window on the left, a stable-type door, a one-light casement window to the right, and two sash windows above. The rear wing has a datestone. The outbuilding incorporates a possible 17th-century granite arch, in two pieces, within its side wall. Above the rear entrance to the outbuilding are three slate boxes, which may have been bee-boles or hen boxes. The interior has not been inspected. The house is well-preserved, with particularly fine quality pointing in the 1842 rear range.
