Description
This is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations in the 18th century, and a 20th-century replica facade. It is constructed of timber framing with brick nogging, although the front facade is a replica timber frame with plaster panels. The roof is tiled, and there are brick stacks. The building comprises a main block with a throughway to the left, a deep back wing, and a lower wing, all featuring steep roof pitches. The front parapet has been rebuilt on earlier foundations.
The house is three storeys high with a basement, and has three windows. The windows are plain sashes; those on the second floor are square, all set within moulded architraves and framed with small square panels. The ground floor, formerly jetted, has a good 19th-century shop front with thin mullions to elliptical heads, set under a deep fascia that partly obscures the window heads. A basement grille and pavement access are on the left side. A door leads to the throughway, situated within plain pilasters and topped by a carved frieze and cornice. The gable on the right has a stack, and is rendered. The left gable is in brick.
The main wing, whose ridge height is slightly below that of the front block, is steeply roofed and features heavy timber framing across two storeys and an attic. A hipped dormer window faces north, and a stack runs in line with the back eaves of the street-facing block. A lower wing is similar, with heavy framing and square plaster panels, and a large brick stack at the external gable. The interior was not inspected.
