Description
This is a late 18th-century building of houses and shops at the end of a row, situated on the north-west side of High Street, Winchcombe. The structure is built of limestone ashlar, with decorative quoins to the unit occupied by "Skittles." It has a mansard roof with stone slates, and a coped gable facing the street on the left end. The building follows a reversed U-plan, with a deep wing fronting Cowl Lane.
The building has two storeys and an attic, with a 1+1+1 window arrangement. A 20th-century, segment-headed dormer and a sash window are visible in the attic gable. The first floor has a sash window, and the ground floor has replacement sashes and 20th-century shop fronts. A glazed door is incorporated into the shop front of Sudeley House, while Abbey House has a good four-panel door with a decorative fanlight in a square head.
The rear, facing Cowl Lane, is in two sections and features breaks in the roofline, with three 12-pane sashes and another 20th-century shop front. The interior details are not specified. The building’s significance lies in its role as an 'anchor group' at the junction of High Street and Abbey Terrace. While altered over time, the building remains an important architectural feature.
