Description
The monument to members of the Maddy family is located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary, approximately 11 metres east of the chancel. This chest tomb commemorates Sir Matthew Wood, Baronet, who died in 1893, and Dame Maria Wood, who died in 1898. It is made of limestone and was formerly surrounded by a cast iron railing. The sides of the tomb feature three panels adorned with blind quatrefoils that have cusped decoration, with a raised shield at the center of each panel, some of which include a brass memorial plaque. The ends of the tomb display similar decorative elements. The divisions between the panels are designed to resemble miniature clamp buttresses. The tomb is capped with a moulded margin and square flower decoration. The Church of St. Mary was rebuilt by the Wood family around 1860.
