Description

7 St Mary's Lane is a house located at the end of a row, with commercial use on the ground floor. It dates from the 16th and 18th centuries and features a mix of rendered surfaces, some timber-framing, painted brick, and plain tiled roofs, along with a brick stack. The building is divided into three units: the front has an early framed section on the right with a full-width gabled range behind it, while the left side has a later hipped unit. The house is two storeys high with a one-over-one window arrangement. The left side has two-light casements and a small additional light on the ground floor, while the right side features a three-light casement above a two-light small-paned casement with a stone cill. There is a 20th-century stable door on the left. A remnant of a stack is located at the junction of the two units. The rear range includes two 16-pane sash windows. The older section connects to the 18th-century part through an opening that has the remains of a square-section stone threshold and a square socket.

Inside, the property features a chamfered and stopped lateral beam, with ceiling joists set at an angle due to the non-square layout. There is a deep bressumer fireplace, which was restructured in the 20th century, and square panel framing on the party wall to No. 6. This house is modest in appearance but is situated at a visually significant point along a bend in St Mary's Lane.
