Description
85 and 86 Church Street are two houses built in the early 18th century, featuring painted Flemish bond brickwork and a hipped tile roof with brick stacks. The buildings have a deep plan with a central through-entry and rise to three storeys with three windows. The windows include 12-pane sashes under segmental heads, with face boxes in the first two bays, and a 4-pane sash in the third bay (No. 86).
On the ground floor, there is a continuous slight fascia board above the entry to No. 84, followed by an open doorway leading to Turners Court in the center. To the right, there is a small 19th-century shop front with a panelled stall-riser and a panelled door beneath a shallow transom light, set back with a two-panelled reveal to the right. The building features a mid plat-band and a moulded wooden eaves course.
The left gable wall displays light panel framing with brick nogging, which is also found in the throughway. At the back, there are two hipped gables with brick dentil eaves and two brick stacks, along with a two-light casement window at the first floor with a segmental head. A long two-storey wing extends to the left (east) side. The interior has not been inspected, but this structure appears to be an unusual complete rebuilding from the 18th century.
