Description

16 and 18 St Mary's Lane is a pair of cottages located at the end of a row on the corner with St Mary's Road in Tewkesbury. They were likely built in the late 16th century and feature a timber-frame structure with painted brick nogging and roofs made of brick and tile. The cottages have a parallel four-bay plan and are of one build, although the roof at the back is not continuous. They back directly onto the Friends Burial Ground, which dates from 1660.

The cottages are two stories tall with an attic and have a total of four windows on the front, two for each cottage. On the first floor, all windows are 2-light casements; in cottage No.16, the left windows are paired around a frame post, with No.18 having 20th-century casements and No.16 having 19th-century ones. On the ground floor, each cottage has a 3-light window, with No.16 featuring a horizontal sliding sash. To the left of each cottage is a door; No.16 has a plank door, while No.18 has a 20th-century door with a fanlight above it. A bressumer beam above the door and window of No.16 suggests that there may have been a former shop front here.

There is a central brick stack on the ridge, and the right gable reveals some of the framing, including a queen-post gable frame. The left return is partly obscured by a later addition, which is not of special interest, but has a small attic light in the framing. The back of the cottages has been mostly rebuilt in brick, although some of the framing remains visible on No.16, along with various single or 2-light windows. The interior has not been inspected.
