Description

The terrace walls and balustrade, along with steps, located to the south and west of Toddington Manor, were likely built in the early to mid 19th century by C. Hanbury-Tracy. The walls are constructed from coursed, squared stone, while the balustrade is made of ashlar. The design features a long 'L'-shaped layout with a significant offset along one leg. The retaining wall is topped with a balustrade that has moulded top and bottom members, decorated with quatrefoils in St Andrew's cross framing. This balustrade is divided into bays by plain vertical members, each typically topped with an urn.

To the south of the main house, there is a flight of ten stone steps with nosings and a ramped balustrade on either side. At the top of the steps, there are large, plain rectangular plinths on each side, which have moulded edges and support statuary. To the right of this main section, there are two bays of wall and balustrade, with an offset of two or three bays, leading to a further run parallel to the house. To the left of the steps, there are two bays forming a corner and an additional run of two bays parallel to the west face of the house, ending with a short offset that features a large urn. Beyond this, there are further steps similar to the first flight, followed by two bays leading to another offset with a large urn and two more bays of wall and balustrade. Photographs indicate a return towards the house, although close access to the site is not possible.
