TODDINGTON - SP 03 SW 3/158 Terrace walls to south and west of Toddington Manor

GV II

Terrace walls and balustrade, and steps. Probably early-mid C19, by and for C. Hanbury-Tracy. Coursed, squared stone to wall, ashlar to balustrade. Long 'L'-plan run, with large offset part way along one leg. Retaining wall with balustrade over, moulded top and bottom members, with quatrefoils in St Andrew's cross framing, divided into bays with plain, vertical member, usually with an urn above. To south of main part of house, flight of 10 stone steps with nosings, ramped balustrade each side; large, plain rectangular plinth each side at top, moulded edge to cap, carrying statuary. Two bays of wall and balustrade to right, offset of 2 or 3 bays, with further run parallel to house. To left of steps, 2 bays, 2 bays to form corner, and further run of 2 bays parallel to west face of house, ending in short offset with large urn. Two bays beyond further steps, similar to first flight: 2 bays to further offset with large urn and 2 bays of wall and balustrade: photographs show a return towards house. Close access not possible.
