Description

The Richard Hayward monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary, approximately 5 meters west of the John Ireland monument. It commemorates Richard Hayward, who died in 1612. The tomb is made of limestone, with a possibly later sandstone capping.

On the north side, there is a raised oval inscription plaque, flanked by standing cherubs that hold up a swag draped over the inscription. The south side features an unused raised rectangular inscription plaque, bordered by narrow panels that display linked floral decorations with a ribbon tie at the top. The east end has a fielded panel adorned with a winged hour-glass on a pedestal, accompanied by curving palm leaves. The west end has a cartouche that is without an inscription. As of March 1985, the monument is leaning significantly towards the north.
