Description
The footbridge over the River Swilgate, built around 1850, is a Grade II listed structure located on Swilgate Road in Tewkesbury. It features a narrow footway supported by two cast-iron plates, which rest on a central brick pier and abutments capped with weathered sandstone. The plates are reinforced with two ribs underneath the walkway and have edge beams that rise towards the center. The balustrade consists of plain vertical rails and a handrail supported by iron scroll brackets, which are cast with the main plates and extend two bays beyond the openings at each end. There are seven bays with eight supporters on each side. The brick abutments are splayed and include trimmed elliptical openings for flood water. The outer ends are paved with concrete. The total length of the footbridge is approximately 10 meters. This structure is a notable example of 19th-century engineering and remains in constant use today.
