Description
The Old Bridge and footbridge in Morpeth is a notable structure with a history dating back to the 13th century. The central pier and abutments from this period remain, while the rest of the bridge was constructed in 1869 by Swinney Bros. of Morpeth, funded by public subscription. The bridge features dressed stone and iron materials.
The surviving 13th-century section includes one pier with triangular cutwaters. The footbridge is supported on flat girders and has railings consisting of four rails with widely spaced standards, featuring round knobs at the intersections. Above the central pier, the railings have square bars and an arched top rail. There is a cast-iron oval panel with an inscription, and above this central section stands a contemporary lamp standard on four tall curved stanchions adorned with scrolled decoration.
