Description
26 and 28 Bridge Street are shops with an early 18th-century core that were largely remodeled in the early 19th century. The exterior features scored stucco and a Welsh slate roof. The building has three storeys and two bays, with a rounded corner bay on the left.
The ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts, which are separated by a rusticated elliptical arch leading to Old Gaol Yard. Above, there are 16-pane sash windows with sill bands, while the rounded corner bay contains rounded 12-pane sashes. The building has projecting stone eaves and a shallow-pitched roof with a brick end stack.
These shops are located on the site of, and likely incorporate masonry from, the old gaol founded in 1704. Inside, the property features six-panel doors and an early 19th-century staircase with stick balusters.
