Description

The Old Schoolhouse is a former school building and attached house located on Atcombe Road in South Woodchester. It dates from the late 17th century, with the school building added around 1840. The structure is made of random rubble limestone, partially roughcast rendered, with ashlar limestone for the school section and rebuilt chimneys of ashlar and brick. It features a stone slate roof.

The house is two stories tall, while the school, located on the east side, is also two stories, forming an L-shape. The south front has the gable end of the house on the left, which includes a doorway behind a 20th-century glazed conservatory porch, and a timber casement window to the left. The upper floor has a three-light chamfered mullioned casement window with a hoodmould. To the right, the school has two windows with three-light mullioned fenestration, all featuring Tudor-headed lights and hoodmoulds. The school has a hipped roof with an eaves-mounted chimney on the east side that has a plain cap.

On the north side, the gable end of the house has a large bow window on the ground floor, a cross window on the upper floor with a timber lintel, and a small fixed light above. There is also a small casement window and a doorway with a glazed door under a combined hoodmould on the east side of the house. A 20th-century addition to the rear of the school is not of special interest. The west side of the house is built against a road embankment and features a blocked upper floor chamfered doorway with a small gable above. The interior has not been inspected. The school was established as one of several dame schools in Woodchester.
