Description

Atcombe Cottage, Barley Acre, Peppercorns, and No 6 is a row of four houses built in the mid-18th century, with alterations and additions made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The buildings are constructed of random and coursed rubble limestone, with ashlar limestone and brick chimneys, topped by a stone slate roof. They are two stories high with an attic.

The front of the houses features generally random rubble on the lower part of the walls, with signs of eaves being raised in later coursed rubble. Barley Acre has chamfered mullioned casements on the ground floor with hoodmoulds, while Peppercorns has restored mullioned windows on its ground floor. The other windows are casements with timber lintels, and Barley Acre has an additional attic casement situated below the eaves. Each house, except No 6, has two gabled roof dormers mounted on the eaves, with Barley Acre featuring leaded iron dormer casements.

At the rear, Atcombe Cottage has a two-story outshut, while Barley Acre has various 20th-century alterations in artificial stone. No 6 has a rendered two-story outshut. The interiors have not been inspected. This row of houses is a relatively unaltered and early example of weaver's houses.
