Description

Old Overtown Cottage is a detached house and outbuilding that was originally part of a stable. It dates from the late 17th century, with some parts possibly from the 18th century, and was altered to become a house in the 20th century. The building is constructed of random rubble limestone, features an ashlar chimney, and has a corrugated asbestos roof.

It is two-storey with an attic and has a single-storey wing at the southwest end, creating an L-shaped plan. The southwest end is the front of the original house, now used as an outbuilding and reduced to a single storey. It has a central doorway with a stone lintel and hoodmould, flanked by three-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements, also with hoodmoulds. The roof is hipped at the left corner. The southeast end of the wing has a gable with a later inserted two-light chamfered mullioned attic casement.

The main part of the building features mixed fenestration, including single and two-light mullioned casements. There are two small upper floor chamfered openings on the southeast side that may have been loft holes. The northeast gable end has single-window fenestration, with a two-light window featuring a hoodmould on both the ground and upper floors, and an oval window in the attic. The cottage is part of a group with Old Overtown House located to the southwest.
