Description
West Hayes is a detached house located in Sheepscombe, originally built as two separate homes. It dates from the 17th century and 19th century, with modifications made in the 20th century. The building features squared and coursed limestone with concrete tile roofs.
The structure has a two-part plan, with a broad gabled wing on the left that is built into the hillside, and a back wing that runs parallel to the road. There is later infill in the plane of the gable on the right side. The front elevation has two storeys and an attic, with one window on the left and two on the right. The gable features three-light flush chamfer-mullion casements on both the ground and first floors, and a two-light casement above, all with hood-moulds. The right side has two-light casements, including a small one in a former door opening, and a two-light gabled dormer from the 20th century, along with a lean-to structure.
In the gabled half on the right, there is a broad plank door beneath a flat canopy. The left return has various openings and a door set in deep reveals at the top left. Although the interior has been significantly modified, it is said to have contained a spiral staircase and features a large blocked fireplace. The gable stacks have been rebuilt.
