Description
Knowle House is a detached house largely rebuilt in the 1840s, with origins in the late 17th century. The front is built of ashlar stone, while the sides and rear are of coursed and random rubble limestone. It has ashlar chimneys and a Welsh slate roof. The house has a single-depth, two-room plan, with three stories, and a single-storey outshut towards the rear. A two-storey addition extends to the west end. The south front has a three-window facade with a central projecting section. It features 16-pane sashes to the ground and middle floors, and a 12-pane sash to the attic; one window has been altered to have a top-hung light. The central doorway has pilasters and an entablature, dated 'P. H. 1845' above the door. The fanlight above the transom has diagonal lattice glazing bars. The door is a four-panel, part-glazed design. A plain cill band runs along the middle floor. The gabled ends have parapets, with chimneys topped with plain caps. Several small casement windows are on the east end, where some original 17th-century masonry is visible up to the first floor. A 19th-century lean-to extends to the west side, which was raised in the 20th century. The original rear outshut was an open shelter, but it is now incorporated into the house. Internally, original mullioned window openings remain in the rear wall, and one retains its leaded casements. The central staircase and other fittings date from 1845. The house demonstrates an adaptation of a traditional Stroud/Painswick gabled cottage style into a compact Victorian villa, and has considerable social historical interest.
